HALO

HALO is pleased to offer the only dedicated medevac helicopter for southern Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan. It is a much-needed contribution to the already established air and ground ambulance service provided by Alberta Health Service - Emergency Medical Services. The availability of the helicopter improves response time to trauma victims in remote or inaccessible areas and increases our coverage area for delivering qualitative medical care. HALO has been dispatched on over 550 missions since our inception. Boundaries of the former Palliser Health Region encompasses in excess of an awe-inspiring 50,000 square kilometers. The remoteness of our region, the lack of landing strips, and the limited availability of other emergency air ambulance helicopters was the inspiration for HALO to begin planning and fundraising for the dream of having a dedicated air ambulance helicopter for the south-east corner of Alberta. In July of 2007, the dream became a reality. In 2018 HALO introduced a twin-engine helicopter, which will enable us to better meet the requirements of the air ambulance designation. This new helicopter substantively increases the service level to all citizens within our service area, however, it also more than doubles the costs to the program. HALO has been funded exclusively through the donations of private individuals and responsible corporate partners.

Lou Shares a few words about HALO

Hi. Why is HALO important. My family had been involved in the program pretty much since it’s inception. It started small as the southern Alberta Medicaid society. They saw a community need that was not being filled. We became much more involved 5 years ago when my husband became the Chief Pilot. Building on a good foundation laid down by others it has now evolved into a worthy contender to serve our very rural community The service is very much needed because rural needs are far different from towns. Accessibility being a major issue. I also belong to The Lions Club of Medicne Hat. Our club have been contributors to HALO as one of our community projects. We helped by purchasing the Night Vision Goggles, these will allow the pilots to provide the same hours of service all year round. Lou
