PREREQUISITE
Special Boiler Operator (SBO)
A non-standardized certificate of competency issued by Alberta through ABSA. It is a site-specific certificate of competency that certifies the operator to supervise a power plant of a capacity not exceeding 250 kW.
For Special Boiler Operator training you will need to,
Special Oilwell Operator (SOO)
A non-standardized certificate of competency issued by Alberta. It certifies the operator to operate transportable power plants, with capacity up to 1000 kW, at drilling sites. This in not a site specific certificate. The certificate is subject to the annual renewal fee through ABSA.
Applicant must complete form AB-144. Application Forms must be submitted 21 days prior to the exam date. ABSA recommends completing this fillable word document over handwriting.
Once form is completed email to
so Safety Buzz Campus can submit for approval by ABSA. Forms must be completed in full including Boiler A #, chief engineer and student signature.
Requirements for this certificate are:

Exam Qualifications:
Applicants must have an approved application, see above under prerequisites
Special Boiler Operator’s
Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must currently be employed in the operation of a power plant that has a capacity not exceeding 250 kW.
Special Oilwell Operators
- obtained 6 months experience in an installation that involves a boiler or boilers operating as part of a transportable power plant at a drilling or hydrocarbon production site, or
- successfully completed a vocational course in boiler operation satisfactory to the Administrator.
Exam Instructions:
Examination will be facilitated and certified through ABSA. Safety Buzz Campus does not have any authority over the examination.
Special Boiler Operator’s
Certificate of Competency examination consists of questions relating to the subjects contained in the current reference syllabus established by the Administrator for the Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination. The examination consists of one (1) examination paper with 50 multiple-choice questions, 1.5 hours duration.
To pass a Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must receive at least 65% of the total marks allotted for the examination.

Special Oilwell Operators
Certificate of Competency examination must consist of questions relating to the subjects contained in the current reference syllabus established by the Administrator for the Special Oilwell Operators Certificate of Competency examination. The exam consists of one (1) examination paper with 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours duration.
- To pass a Special Oilwell Operators Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must obtain at least 65% of the total marks allotted for the examination.
