CLASS 1 MELT (Mandatory Entry Level Training)

STEP 1 COMPLETE MELT PROGRAM

You will participate in training delivered by Safety Buzz Campus. Class 1 MELT program will take 113 hours to complete. This total does not include the Air Brake program, which is approximately 8.5 additional hours. Please note that you MUST be 18 years of age and have a NON GDL class 5 licence. If you are 17 or have a GDL, legally you can NOT be trained..

CLASSROOM TRAINING

  • The standardized classroom session is: Class 1: 40.5 hours

  • To operate a vehicle equipped with air brakes, you must have an air brake (Q-Endorsement) on your driver’s licence.

  • To get a Class 1 driver’s licence, you must first successfully complete the Air Brake Program for your Q-Endorsement.

IN-YARD TRAINING

  • The standard in-yard training session is: Class 1: 15.5 hours

PRACTICAL TRAINING

  • The standard practical training session is: Class 1: 57 hours

COSTS

  • ALL Driver training courses and fees are GST EXEMPT

  • Class 1 MELT course $10,000. There is a mandatory $1000 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit required upon registration to reserve your place in the class. In the event that you MUST re-book, your deposit IS transferrable to another date. This deposit will be applied to the $10,000 course fee.

  • Air Brakes (If needed) $220

  • Written test and road test is the driver’s responsibility and will be paid to Alberta Registries.

  • Road test will be booked by Safety Buzz Campus and will cost an additional $217 GST EXEMPT

  • The 2 hour road test will begin at Safety Buzz Campus and the rental of the road test vehicle $145/hr, for a total of $290

  • On the day of the road test you will go for two hour a pre-test drive before the actual road test. This is an additional cost of $290

  • Additional costs may apply if the driver requires more in-yard or practical training time.

  • Subject to funding availability, support and training opportunities may be available through the Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) program to those who meet eligibility requirements. The CAJG helps employers who are not in the public sector. Funding can be used to help with truck/bus driver training when the trainee is unemployed, or when training is incremental, such as when an individual is moving to a different role in the organization. Training must be provided by a third-party.

  • Subject to funding availability, support and training opportunities may be available through the HR Trucking Grant to those who meet eligibility requirements. The HR Trucking Grant helps employers who are not in the public sector. Funding can be used to help with truck/bus driver training when the trainee is currently employed. Training must be provided by a third-party.


STEP 2 PASS DRIVER KNOWLEDGE TEST, VISION & MEDICAL

KNOWLEDGE TEST

VISION TEST

  • Pass a vision test. Registry Agent will test your vision to see if your vision is good enough to drive.

MEDICAL TEST

  • A completed Driver's Medical Report Form *will be required prior to the road test for class 1 licences. There is a fee associated with this test to be paid directly to the doctor, by the student.


STEP 3 SCHEDULE ROAD TEST

We will work with you to schedule a Class 1 Driver's Road Test

Testing will begin in the Safety Buzz Campus yard.

Safety Buzz Campus can provide a vehicle that meets all legal requirements at the cost of $145/hr for the road test.

Before your road test, you must contact any Alberta registry agent to confirm your eligibility and identity. This should be done up to 72 hours before your scheduled test.  We will provide you with a form to bring.


STEP 4 PASS THE ROAD TEST

You must pass the pre-trip inspection and the driver’s road test.


STEP 5 GO TO THE REGISTRY AGENT

Once you have passed the pre-trip inspection and road test, you can visit any Alberta registry agent to get your Class 1 driver’s licence. Learn about obtaining a commercial licence.
